Victorian Castles

Picturesque
Salvin was a pupil of Nash who worked in the Georgian tradition of the picturesque. Watercolours painted by Salvin show how he adjusted the size and shapes of buildings to achieve the best compositions and effects of light. Peckforton is distinguishable from real castles because of its mechanical and calculated appearance.

Dromore Castle
Dromore Castle in County Limerick, Ireland was designed by E.W. Godwin for the third Earl of Limerick. It has already been mentioned that Victorian castles faced ridicule by the critics and Dromore was no exception for Godwin used the Finian rising as his reason. Godwin had help from Burges in researching Irish castles and produced a fully defensible building that also proved uninhabitable. Dromore Castle was a mix of fifteenth and sixteenth century Irish design that was authentic in its elements.

Castles of the Early Nineteenth Century
The building of castles in the early nineteenth century seemed to consist mainly of houses made to look like castles, an attempt to get the feel of the middle ages with gothic architecture but with the comforts of the modern time. As the trend declined, those that stuck with the Gothic style moved to more of an extreme by building replicas of Edwardian castles. This was perhaps due to the critisism that was thrown at such ventures, in the face of which an architect and his patron had to reach the peak of excellence, in terms of physical structure and reasoning behind it, or be bombarded with ridicule. This upward climb of authentic castle building reached its zenith and death with Castell Coch, Peckforton Castle and Dromore Castle. The death of Nineteenth Century castle building was also probably to do with the fact that castles proved so difficult to live in. Small windows and thick stone walls made castles very cold. Castell Coch was hardly ever lived in, Peckforton castle hasn't been lived in since the war and Dromore Castle was dismantled.
